Using the design language of Layer Design, an award winning design consultancy head by Benjamin Hubert. Create a new product for a company as if they were Layer’s client. Microsoft does not have a line of speakers, therefore was seen as an opportunity to create a new kind of speaker that would fit into the preexisting line of Microsoft Surface product line.

Process

Sketches to find a form that fit well with the Microsoft Surface product line. Also exploring different avenues in features and functions to bring the product into fruition.

3D printed the model in FDM. Top texture was rough due to support material in which bondo was required to smooth out surface. Spraying layers of primer followed by a neutral color pallet and sanding in between. Soldering electrical components and re-soldering after realizing wiring was backwards.

Final functioning model with rechargeable batteries and bluetooth board for easy pairing. Using transducer speakers to transfer vibrations which creates an amplified sound depending on the object the speaker is resting on. Also features LED lights to visualize power and bluetooth status.
